What is Strengths Based Living?
Why can't I just read the book or take the test?
The Strengths movement was popularized in the late 1990's the workplace by Marcus Buckingham and the Clifton Strengths Finder survey. Probably less well known (at least in the corporate environment) but equally powerful is the work of the VIA Institute on Character which is based on the science of Positive Psychology. Many people have used these research-based assessments to identify their strengths, and I recommend either or both as a first step.
The problem is that many people stop at the first step, identification of strengths, without moving on to the other crucial steps of: understanding, integrating and refining them. Following all of the steps is where Strengths Based Living happens. When you can use your strengths in all aspects of your life to move closer to your unique purpose, then you are using your strengths to their fullest.
For example, I first took the CSF assessment as a part of a leadership course at work. It was then that I learned that one of my talent themes was Empathy. I could have simply used this knowledge at work to have a greater understanding of the feelings of my team as I managed them on a daily basis. However, a fuller use of my strength was only realized as I applied it to other aspects of my life such as helping my daughter to develop her Empathy by encouraging her to consider her baby brother's feelings when she doesn't share a toy. I now find countless examples each day of how I use my strengths to bring myself energy rather than exhaustion. In fact, I am known for not drinking coffee, but rather being, "high on life!"
